Strawberry Ger Hostel
Strawberry Ger Hostel is the newest place to stay in the aimag center, and the most unusual. Travelers stay in authentic gers (felt tents used by nomads).
The accomodations are basic, and guests can rent a bed or an entire ger. The manager speaks English. Indoor toliets are available, but for showers guests are directed to the community Shower House.
The hostel is located on the grounds of a secondary school on the west side of town, a short 5-minute walk from the main square.
There is a canteen that serves simple Mongolian food, a common area for lounging, and free tea and instant coffee. Other services available are pick-up from the Hovd airport and laundry. The manager will also help travelers make travel arrangements with drivers, guides, and translators.
In addition to the chance to sleep in a ger, the hostel offers another not-to-be missed taste of Mongolian culture--a traditional barbeque/cookout by the scenic Buyant River, just outside of town. Prices depend on the current price of animals; a single sheep or goat is killed for each barbeque.
