The Altai Mountains cut horizontally across the width of Hovd aimag, so an easy way to break the aimag down is into thirds: the Northern Soums, which are found to the north of the Altai range / the Altai soums, which are found predominantly within the Altai range / and the Sub-Altai Soums, which are the three soums beyond the Altai Mountain passes.
