Welcome to the rugged and beautiful aimag (province) of Hovd in western Mongolia. A land of contrasts, Hovd is far removed from the more populous regions of central Mongolia, but home to more indigenous ethnic groups than any other aimag in the country. Largely a barren semi-desert but also awash with a sprawling network of lakes and rivers that includes Khar Us Nuur, Mongolia's second largest freshwater lake, Mongolia's tallest waterfall, and the fertile Buyant River Valley where Hovd produces its bounty of fruits and vegetables including the famous Hovd watermelon. The capital of the aimag (also called Hovd and often used interchangeably) is a pleasant and easy-going city whose freedom was won after centuries of brutal struggles against the Manchus.
