Local Attractions

This page is devoted to attractions that can be found in or around the aimag center (Hovd city).

To the north of the main square is the (3) Hovd Museum, which houses two floors of Hovd artifacts that date from the very recent past to the Late Stone Age.

Worth seeing together with the museum are the Manchu ruins of (5) Sangiin Kherem, located a few blocks north of the museum where the main road dead-ends.

Directly across the street from the main square is the bright red (12) Hovd Theater, which serves as a regular showcase for cultural events, plays, and Khoomii performances. For a schedule of upcoming events visit the Community Calendar page.

The main monastery in the aimag center is (2) Tureemel Amarjuulagai Khiid also located just north of the main square but tucked away from the main street on the west side.

To the east of the Manchu ruins and in the heart of the Kazakh neighborhood is the city's mosque (6)Akhmet Ali Mejit.

On the northbound road to Buyant soum are the healing springs of (7) Ulaan Bogchiin Rashaan, an easy 30 minute walk north of the city.

Although about 100km southeast of Hovd City, the Stone Age cave paintings at Tsenkheriin Agui are only a day-trip away from the aimag center.

Note: Other important places that might be of interest to visitors that aren't exactly "Local Attractions" (i.e. Post Office, Internet, Shower House, etc...) can be found in the Local Institutions section.
