[edit] Welcome to Hovd
Welcome to the rugged and beautiful aimag (province) of Hovd in western Mongolia. A land of contrasts, Hovd is far removed from the more populous regions of central Mongolia, but home to more distinct ethnic groups than any other aimag in the country. Largely a barren semi-desert but also awash with a sprawling network of lakes and rivers that includes Khar Us Nuur, Mongolia's second largest freshwater lake, and the fertile Buyant River Valley where Hovd produces its bounty of fruits and vegetables including the famous Hovd watermelon. The capital of the aimag (also called Hovd and often used interchangeably) is a pleasant and easy-going city whose freedom was won after centuries of brutal struggles against the Manchus.
At the end of Summer 2008 visitors to Hovd will be treated to Market Day on September 1st and 2nd. Within these pages you will find a comprehensive guide to Hovd, with advice on not just where to go, but practical information on how to get there. Find linkages to local guides and drivers who are eager and ready to show you their aimag. See inside each of Hovd's hotels before deciding where to stay. Get acquainted with the shopping opportunities in Hovd, including its wealth of locally-produced Kazakh embroidered goods. As a remote region in an already remote country, few discover the wonders of Hovd. Be one of the few who make the journey.
